Oil & Gas & Petrochemical Steel Fabrication
Process piping, pressure vessels, plant structures and shutdown maintenance — fabricated in Australia, delivered to schedule.
No import delays. No offshore lead time uncertainty. CC3-certified fabrication from our purpose-built 1.8-hectare facility in Villawood, NSW.
Australian Steel Fabrication for the Oil & Gas Sector
NWEC has been fabricating structural steel and process piping for refineries, LNG facilities, petrochemical plants and processing facilities since 1976. With CC3 certification, AS/NZS ISO 3834.2 welding quality accreditation, and a facility capable of processing 80 tonnes per week, we have the capacity and the compliance credentials to meet the demands of major Oil & Gas projects.
Our Villawood facility handles the full fabrication scope in-house — from structural steel and pressure vessel fabrication to complex process piping assemblies — then coordinates delivery and field installation directly. There are no third-party fabricators in the chain and no offshore components causing programme risk.
For EPC contractors, subcontract managers and procurement teams working against tight schedules, that means one thing: certainty.
What We Fabricate for Oil & Gas and Petrochemical Projects
Process Piping
We fabricate high-specification process piping for refineries, LNG plants, petrochemical processing facilities and upstream oil and gas infrastructure. Our piping fabrication is carried out to AS/NZS ISO 3834.2 welding standards, with full traceability, weld mapping and documentation packages supplied as standard.
We work across carbon steel, stainless steel and alloy materials, and our in-house blasting and painting workshop — a 2,000m² fully enclosed facility — means surface treatment is completed under controlled conditions before handover. Surface preparation is carried out to AS 1627.4 and ISO 8501-1, protective coating to AS/NZS 2312, and inspection and DFT testing to AS 3894.
Pressure Vessels
NWEC fabricates pressure vessels for processing, storage and separation applications within the Oil & Gas and petrochemical sector. Our vessels are fabricated to AS 1210 and undergo full dimensional inspection and non-destructive testing where specified. Documentation is prepared to client requirements, including material traceability, weld records and inspection test plans.
Plant Structures and Structural Steel
Pipe racks, equipment support structures, access platforms, mezzanines, skid frames and other structural steelwork make up a significant part of every petrochemical and refinery project. NWEC fabricates plant structures to CC3 classification — the highest structural steel category under AS/NZS 5131 — with consistent weld quality that means components arrive site-ready and installed without remedial work.
Our structural fabrication is certified to TfNSW CC3 and SCA CC3, giving procurement teams on major Australian infrastructure and resource projects the assurance they need to specify NWEC with confidence.
Shutdown and Turnaround Maintenance
Shutdown windows are not flexible. When a refinery or processing facility needs fabricated components for a turnaround, the delivery date is fixed. NWEC’s record in shutdown and maintenance fabrication is built on understanding that reality.
We have worked in live-site environments and complex shutdown programmes across Oil & Gas, processing and heavy industrial facilities. Our workforce scales from 50 to 80 permanent staff up to 500 field personnel, giving us the flexibility to respond to scope changes or compressed timelines without compromising quality.
Australian Fabricator — TfNSW CC3, SCA CC3, AS/NZS 5131 & ISO Accredited
Oil & Gas and petrochemical procurement processes are compliance-driven. NWEC holds every certification your specification is likely to require:
Certification | Relevance |
|---|---|
CC3 (AS/NZS 5131) | Highest structural steel execution category |
ISO 45001:2018 | Occupational health and safety management |
ISO 14001:2015 | Environmental management system |
AS/NZS ISO 3834.2 | Comprehensive welding quality requirements |
TfNSW CC3 | NSW Government infrastructure projects |
SCA CC3 | Steelwork Compliance Australia |
PCCP | Pre-qualified Construction Contractor Program |
Weld Australia named NWEC the 2024 Company of the Year — Fabrication, a nationally recognised acknowledgement of consistent weld quality across complex, large-scale projects.
Proven on Major Australian Energy and Industrial Projects
NWEC has delivered fabricated steelwork on some of Australia’s most significant Oil & Gas and industrial projects. Our experience spans major LNG facilities, refinery infrastructure and complex process plant structures.
Featured Project:
Ichthys LNG Project NWEC delivered fabricated structural steelwork for the Ichthys LNG development as a fabrication sub-contractor, one of the largest oil and gas projects in Australian history. The project required fabrication to strict quality and documentation standards in a complex multi-contractor environment, and NWEC delivered to programme.
Why Oil & Gas Contractors Choose NWEC
No Import Lead Time Risk
With offshore fabrication, a four-week shipping delay can become an eight-week shutdown extension. NWEC fabricates entirely in Australia. Our Villawood facility produces and dispatches to site without import logistics in the equation. For projects where the critical path runs through the fabrication package, that matters.
50 Years of Continuous Operation
NWEC has been operating since 1976. That is not a marketing claim — it is a traceable history of projects delivered. In an industry where track record is part of every prequalification, a 50-year operating history carries weight.
Scale When You Need It
Our permanent team of 50 to 80 staff handles steady programme work. When major shutdowns or accelerated project phases require it, our workforce mobilises to up to 500 field personnel. Scope changes do not stop production.
One Facility, Full Scope
Fabrication, blasting and painting are all completed at our Villawood facility. There are no subcontracted surface treatment arrangements or external coating yards in the process. What leaves our gate is ready to install.
Supporting Australia's Sovereign Industrial Capability
NWEC is Australian owned and has operated without interruption for five decades. We are not a branch office of an overseas fabricator, and we do not subcontract offshore. Every tonne we fabricate contributes to Australia’s domestic manufacturing capability — and to the sovereign supply chain that Oil & Gas asset owners and government-aligned projects increasingly need to demonstrate.

Frequently Asked Questions
What welding standards does NWEC fabricate process piping to?
NWEC fabricates process piping to AS/NZS ISO 3834.2, which covers comprehensive quality requirements for fusion welding. All welds are produced by qualified welders with full traceability documentation available on request.
Can NWEC manage shutdown fabrication with short lead times?
Yes. Our workforce scales up to 500 personnel to meet shutdown and turnaround requirements, and our in-house blasting and painting facility removes a common bottleneck in compressed programmes. We have a proven history of working within live-site shutdown environments.
Does NWEC supply documentation packages for Oil & Gas projects?
Yes. We produce material traceability documentation, weld maps, inspection test plans and as-built records to suit client and project-specific requirements. For regulated facilities and EPC contracts, these packages are standard practice.
Where does NWEC deliver fabricated steelwork?
Our fabrication facility is based in Villawood, NSW. We deliver to project sites across Australia and have experience coordinating logistics for remote Oil & Gas and resource project locations.
Is NWEC prequalified for major contractor programmes?
NWEC holds CC3 certification under AS/NZS 5131 and TfNSW and SCA prequalification, and is registered under the PCCP programme. We have a documented history working within Tier 1 EPC and major head contractor environments.
